How about a light bending matrix?

Hmm. Thread necro for my first post. Awesome.
Anyway.
Given the general nature of CTech, I'm thinking that the fog projector is perhaps not just a meteorological effect generator. There's no ammo limit, so it's not using an onboard supply of fuel or chemicals. There's no requirement to use it in a humid environment, so it's not condensing fog out of ambient atmospheric moisture or groundwater. What does that leave? It's summoning fog from elsewhere.
Looking at the mechanics given and the suggestions already posted in this thread, I think the fog projector is intended for use as a defensive item rather than an offensive one. You don't use it to screen yourself as you close to melee. You pop fog to break contact, then engage your stealth systems once the fog is screwing with enemy sensors. Poof - ninja vanish. For the urban mecha without stealth systems, just start filling the alleys as you move to encircle your targets, then shoot and scoot. Apologies if I missed this being stated up-thread.
In a pinch, you can use it as a visual-range signaling device if your comms are down/jammed, but you'd better be ready to un-ass the position before the bugs call fire on your rather conspicuous self.
Also, depending on just what the fog really is, what might you be summoning with it? Apologies to Steven King, but...

This is a pretty big leap in logic. It may just be that the ammo limit is negligible in game terms. _________________ "You went on and on about how sweet the candy was, then told me not to put it in my mouth, and got mad at me when I did."

As far as I'm aware the fog generators use a chemical mixture that's negligible as far as use. It's not mystical or otherwise, that's something I can definitely say. _________________ Major Richard Winters: "Captain Sobel, you salute the rank, not the man." |

Fair enough, if a bit disappointing. I had a nice tangent going about the things that live in the fog and impair targeting by eating certain wavelengths of radiation.

Well, it's entirely possible that, for the Auphan, it's a function of the creature under the armour as opposed to a technological addition, like the Cold Resistance of the Seraph and the various acid maws/claws of other Engels. Perhaps it naturally secretes the cloud all the time, and has to be stopped from doing so. _________________ Author of Aeon Natum Engel, a Cthulhutech / Neon Genesis Evangelion Setting Merger Fan-Fiction. |

| The first thing I question is how long this fog lays around? Obviously, it would depends upon ambient wind conditions if you're going to be a stickler to it - but what is to say in gentle breeze/no wind conditions, it wouldn't stick around for several rounds after the unit dispensing it finished? This is how modern smoke canisters are used - when you have a lance of 3-4 mecha popping fog at the same time, you're looking at a line 90 yards across where you can't see a damn thing visually. They don't even have to stick around to get that advantage - this is especially true of faster units. Can you imagine the psychological effect of a wall of smoke...you fire into the wall, hit nothing, only to have an identical wall start to spring up behind you? Or start to curve around, encircling you? |

So why not use the fog as a distraction? If the big argument is that standing in a solitary cloud of fog is going to attract attention, why not run the fog for a bit and then sneak away. They'll be all "Ha! There he is and shooting at a cloud of nothing while you're sneaking up on them.
Also, think there might be a way to connect the fog projectors to the engels acid...ducts? what do you call the things that make acid? glands?...I mean, if you could do that than use it against people sized things. The fog turns on and aerosols the acid, voila instant death cloud for anything breathing in the general area.
Just a couple quick thoughts from someone who has to much hypothetical in their system. |
